Historic Book Talk: Jack Dempsey

Join us for an inspiring and enlightening book talk at the War Memorial, featuring the groundbreaking work Warriors for Liberty. This deeply researched volume brings to light the pivotal contributions of Michigan’s African Americans during the Civil War, both on the battlefield and beyond. From the heroic 1st Michigan Colored Infantry Regiment to unsung civilians who fought for freedom in countless ways, these stories highlight the courage, resilience, and patriotism of Michiganders of African descent in one of America’s most transformative eras.

Discover the remarkable journey of William Dollarson, who escaped slavery in Natchez, became a conductor on the Underground Railroad in Detroit, and ultimately served alongside Michigan’s leading general in the fight against the Confederacy. Marking the 160th anniversary of the regiment’s formation, this event sheds new light on the sacrifices made by Black Michiganders, including their response to the harrowing 1863 Detroit riot that further galvanized their commitment to liberty and justice.

Don’t miss this chance to explore fresh scholarship, compelling narratives, and a profound tribute to the men and women who helped shape the fight for emancipation. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or new to this vital chapter of American history, this book talk promises to inform, inspire, and honor the enduring legacy of those who fought for freedom.

Doors Open at 6:30pm. with the lecture at 7pm. Light refreshments will be provided. Beer & Wine will be available for purchase. To register, visit warmemorial.org/eventcalendar11/historic-book-talk-jack-dempsey
