The Other America in 2022 Sponsored by the GP & HW NAACP
On March 14, 1968, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and local leaders
made history together when he delivered his “The Other America”
speech at Grosse Pointe South High School. Tragically, just a few
weeks later, on the 4th of April, Dr. King was assassinated.
In honor of Dr. King’s speech, on Monday, March 14, 2022, the Grosse
Pointes & Harper Woods NAACP Branch will host Dr. Ibram X.
Kendi, author of “How to be an Antiracist” and Director of the Center
for Antiracist Research at Boston University, at the Ford House in
Grosse Pointe Shores.
“The Other America in 2022” will feature dialogue between Dr. Kendi
and local students. It is sure to capture the attention of people across
the country as we commemorate the historic event of 54 years ago
and discuss what has and has not changed in places like the Grosse
Pointes.
Funds raised will be used support the attendance and participation of
students at this event, as well as to award college scholarships to high
school seniors in the pursuit of the NAACP mission “to secure the
political, educational, social and economic equality of rights in order to
eliminate race-based discrimination.” Given the realities of navigating
COVID-19, this will be an invitation-only event
Doors open at 4PM. Begins promptly at 5PM.
