At The War Memorial, we believe in the power of cuisine as art. For our March 28th edition of An Evening with Chef Joe Paxton, Chef Joe’s Steakhouse is open for one night only! You’ll experience a themed menu with remarks on each course delivered by our Executive Chef, along with an opportunity for you to ask questions on ingredient selection and technique.
Join us for a special evening that includes a 4-course meal and full cash bar with suggested pairings in our beautiful lakefront ballroom. The evening’s menu is listed below.

Evening with Karl Marlantes: Echoes of the Vietnam War
Join best-selling author and Vietnam veteran Karl Marlantes for an evening of insightful discussion about his life, military service, and acclaimed literary career. A Yale graduate and Rhodes Scholar, Marlantes served as a Marine in Vietnam, earning the Navy Cross, Bronze Star, and other honors. His celebrated novel Matterhorn was hailed by The New York Times as “one of the most profound and devastating novels ever to come out of Vietnam—or any war.” His other works include Deep River, exploring Finnish immigrants in the Pacific Northwest, and his latest release, Cold Victory, which examines Finland’s political climate during World War II.
The evening includes a featured talk by Marlantes, followed by an on-stage moderated conversation. Audience questions are encouraged—don’t miss this rare opportunity to engage with an acclaimed literary voice and decorated veteran, as he shares his insights on war, service, and storytelling.

7pm Moderated Conversation with Audience Q&A — An Evening with Karl Marlantes: Echoes of The Vietnam War, presented in The War Memorial’s Alger Center Ballroom; open seating. Premium level ticket holders will have special access to a designated section nearest the stage.
8pm Photo Opportunity — Photos of individuals and groups with Karl Marlantes will be taken with your own camera or mobile phone, facilitated by The War Memorial’s professional staff. Copies of Karl Marlantes’ works will be available for purchase.

Grosse Pointe War Memorial Veterans Club Meeting
The February 13, 2025 Grosse Pointe War Memorial Veterans Club meeting & program will start at 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. with social hour to 5:00 P.M. Our presentation will be on U.S. Navy Aircraft Carriers. Aircraft carriers have always been a key tool in enforcing U.S. foreign policy. Today, they are a crucial element in the war on terror. They are more important than ever before. Today we have Navy Veteran William Falinski to answer questions. Navy Veteran Palinski has served on three different aircraft carriers. The meeting will be held at The War Memorial located at 32 Lake Shore Drive in the veterans room on the lower level.
