War Memorial: Substance Abuse Suicide Prevention

For the second veterans educational seminar of the year at The War Memorial, we take a look at ways to support veterans through the various means of professional help that exists for suicide prevention and for those looking to recover from alcohol use. The April seminar will coincide with Alcohol Awareness Month.

The free seminar and lunch is planned for Thursday, April 25, led by representatives from Volunteers of America Michigan and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Veterans Committee, new in 2023, has a goal to offer more initiatives and programs for veterans. From family events to seminars that are pertinent to those who have honorably served our country, The War Memorial is eager to give back to our veterans!

Join us for an engaging stroll through the picturesque Ford House grounds, where each outing offers the chance for a unique experience to see many birds. After the walk, unwind with a cup of coffee or tea while compiling a list of the birds found.

This captivating birding expedition spans approximately one and a half to two hours, navigating both paved and unpaved paths. Dress appropriately for the weather, including comfortable waterproof shoes. Don’t worry if you don’t have binoculars – you can borrow a pair from us!

Should the weather take an unexpected turn, fear not. If the program is canceled, your tickets can be donated to Ford House Education initiatives or exchanged for another exciting program. Immerse yourself in the world of birds at Ford House – where every walk is a new adventure!

ABOUT THIS EVENT: Step into the enchanting world of ballroom dance with Louis Johnson, the passionate head coach of Momentum Ballroom Dance Team! Inspired by the timeless romance of Edsel and Eleanor Ford, who first met at a dance class, our ballroom dance class invites you to discover the elegance of the Foxtrot. Whether you’re a solo dancer or arriving with a friend, Louis welcomes all skill levels to experience the joy of smooth, flowing movements across the dance floor.

The Foxtrot, a smooth, progressive dance characterized by long, continuous flowing movements across the dance floor, has its roots in the 1910s. The dance reached its peak in the glamorous 1930s and still captivates hearts today.

Louis Johnson is a nationally ranked club of Pro/Am Dancesport competitors based in Detroit. In addition to Ballroom Dancing, Louis is also a DJ, basketball analyst, Tech serviceman, Humorist, Comedy Writer, and stand-up Comedian. He brings his expertise to each lesson, creating an atmosphere where good music and good food meet the art of dance.

This class takes place over four weekly sessions.

Through engaging activities and hands-on exploration, children delve into an array of captivating topics, uncovering the wonders of nature and science. Led by knowledgeable guides, this enriching experience ignites young imaginations, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the world around us. Join us as we embark on an adventure of discovery and learning!

For Explorers: Earth Day, children will enjoy a fun-filled nature-themed scavenger hunt and then make a special project to take home, all in honor of Earth Day on April 22.

Part of this program will take place outside, and the walk will be on both paved and unpaved paths. Please wear weather-appropriate clothes. In case of inclement weather, this program will be canceled, and tickets can be donated to Ford House Education endeavors or exchanged for another program.
